When you describe a full-size pickup truck, you use words like, "manly," "rugged," and "tough." When it comes to safety in a collision, though, how safe is a truck, really?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) cast light on some major shortcomings in the large pickup segment. When subjected to a small-overlap collision -- a much more common type of full-speed collision than a direct hit -- almost every truck examined failed to protect the driver from serious injuries to the feet and lower legs.
In 2015, the first year the IIHS ran small-overlap crash tests on pickup trucks, the Ford F-150 SuperCrew cab style afforded good protection, but the SuperCab model fell short. This year, both styles were the only trucks tested to earn the highest protection ratings.
"Ford is leading the way among large pickup manufacturers when it comes to protecting people in a range of crashes and offering technology to warn drivers of imminent frontal crashes," said Raul Arbelaez, vice president of the Institute's Vehicle Research Center. "We commend Ford for taking last year's test results to heart and upgrading protection for SuperCab occupants in small overlap crashes."
